Download Free Water Treatment GuideWhen it comes to oilfield production, scale inhibition and halite deposition can mean the difference between profit and costly downtime. With water treatment costs soaring and sustainability taking center stage, producers are actively seeking alternatives that don’t compromise performance. Enter Soltellus™ 2402L, the biodegradable, high-performance polymer solution from Lygos for water treatment in energy production.
Two new case studies from leading operators in North Dakota’s Bakken and Williston Basins reveal how Soltellus™ 2402L helped drive significant operational and financial improvements. From freshwater reduction to improved oil and gas output, the results speak for themselves.
A major operator in the Williston Basin sought a sustainable way to reduce freshwater costs while maintaining scale inhibition performance. The challenge: halite precipitation and scale formation were cutting into productivity and profitability, and their existing phosphonate-based inhibitors posed environmental concerns.
Over a 120-day field trial, the operator injected Soltellus™ 2402L at an initial dosage of 200 ppm, later reducing to 100 ppm as operations stabilized. Freshwater flow rates were cut dramatically, from 177 barrels per day to 76, across four wells. Phosphonate inhibitors were removed entirely.
The Results:
In another trial, a Bakken operator struggled with halite scaling that even maximum freshwater injection couldn’t prevent. The well was plateauing despite using 28–30 barrels of freshwater daily. Experts estimated that 40–50 barrels were needed to control the issue, beyond the pump’s capabilities.
Soltellus™ 2402L was introduced at 150 ppm. Within 45 days, halite buildup was eliminated, freshwater injection was cut to 18 barrels per day, and the incumbent scale inhibitor program was discontinued.
The Results:
Soltellus™ 2402L is a water-based biodegradable polymer that inhibits halite and other scale-forming salts (Ca, Ba, Sr, Mg) in high-brine environments. Its peptide-based structure provides high-temperature stability and compatibility with corrosion inhibitors and biocides, making it a versatile tool for optimizing oilfield operations without compromising environmental impact.
With global pressure mounting for more sustainable but high-performing practices in the energy sector, Soltellus offers a rare win-win: lower operational costs and better environmental stewardship. Whether you’re looking to reduce freshwater use, increase production, or replace outdated chemistries, Soltellus™ is ready to support your goals.
